Opposition Labor leader Gough Whitlam was on his way to government at the end of 1972. He met many hindrances due to union and other problems in the State of Victoria. Protests about the Vietnam War were rife.

Similarly, the various space programs were in need of support and there was much talk about the Apollo Lunar Lander which made its seventh and final manned Moon landing in December 1972.
