World Series cricket was introduced by Kerry Packer in 1977 after a
failed deal for television rights. In the professional competition from
1977 to 1979 coloured clothing, white balls, floodlights and huge
salaries for the chosen members of the teams were all part of the new
deal but are now taken for granted in the cricket world. State and
National teams and including the Victorian Cricket Association were
losing their best batsmen as they signed with Kerry Packer. After huge
wins by the World Team in 1979 things changed again and Test cricket in
its new guise is still played around the world.
