Getting out while ahead!

The shattered portrait of Gough Whitlam is a reflection of the state of play in the Australian Labor Party at the time. In a move not approved by all but known to Prime Minister Bob Hawke the ALP President Mick Young had accepted a profitable appointment as a consultant to Qantas as a state election was about to be held in New South Wales.

Paul Keating was known to be considering his future moves. Bill Hayden was Minister for Foreign Affairs at this time and Bob Hogg had been nominated as National Secretary of the ALP.
