Guarding the post.

The Parliament of Australia had taken up residence in the New Parliament House which was opened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth on 8th May 1988.

Prime Minister Bob Hawke and Treasurer Paul Keating were arming themselves to deal with fall-out from many issues including the May Budget statement and immigration. National Party Premier of Queensland, Mike Ahern had taken over after the resignation of Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen. The problems of race politics and immigration had been identified by Professor Geoffrey Blainey - the much respected historian.
